Description
The Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehra Dun had its modest origins as the Forest School, established in 1878. Initially named the Imperial Forest Research Institute, it officially took the form of FRI in 1906. Subsequently renamed the Forest Research Institute and Colleges, the institution expanded with various centers nationwide, dedicated to both research and the training of Forest Officers and Forest Rangers.
With the reorganization of forestry research in 1988 and the establishment of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), these training and research centers gained independent status as institutes. The Forest Research Institute, now operating under ICFRE, attained the distinction of a Deemed University in December 1991, following the recommendations of the UGC (University Grants Commission) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
